Hi Sashiko Lovers! It's Jun again. I am going to make the lining for the Sashiko simple bag.
Previous post --->[Simple Sashiko bag Part 1]
Unfortunately, you can't make a lining with a Fat Quarter. (If you have two of them, you can!) If you don't have any extra fabric, you could use an old pillow case or something. It's just a lining.
What you need :
1. Cut out the piece. It should be the same width as your Sashiko bag piece, and 1 inch shorter than your Sashiko piece.
For example, my Sashiko piece is 12 inch width x 16 inch height when it's folded in half. So I cut the lining out 12 inch x 15.5 inch.
2. If you want to make a pocket, cut the small piece out as 6 inch x 9 inch.
3. Before you sew the pocket onto the lining fabric, sew around the pocket with zig zag stitches except the top line. ... I used the red thread to show the lines
4. Fold once on the zig zag lines (the sides and the bottom), and then fold twice on the top line. The seam will be about 3/8 inch or 1 cm.
5. Sew the top line first.
6. Place the pocket on the lining. The location is up to you. I placed it in the middle of the centre.
7. Sew the pocket onto the lining. I suggest to do back stitching on the corners to reinforce.
8. Place your Sashiko piece and the lining with right sides together. Sew the top of the bag with 1 inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance. Repeat on the other side.
9. Open the seams with a steam iron.
10. Open your Sashiko piece and the lining like the picture. Match the switching part carefully.
11. Sew the sides with 3/8 inch or 1 cm seam. Don't forget to leave about 10 - 15 cm (your knuckle size) on the lining to turn the bag out later.
12. Open the seams with an iron.
13. Turn the bag right side out from the opening. Fix the corners of your Sashiko piece to make sharp points. ( Don't worry about the lining corners )
14. Stitch the opening closed with a narrow seam.
15. Push the lining into your Sashiko piece, making sure the lining does not show from the outside as shown. This will make your Sashiko bag a little nicer!
16. Stitch along the top edge twice. One is near the edge, the other one is about 5/8 inch or 1.5 mm inside from the edge.
Actually, it looks very nice with flower pattern fabric. It doesn't have to be Japanese pattern when you make something with Sashiko. That is really good to know for me.
Making instructions with pictures is still difficult for me, but I am enjoying it. If you don't understand any steps, please let me know. I would appriciate your advice! See you soon.

What you need :
- About the same size of fabric as your Sashiko bag piece.
- 6 inch x 9 inch fabric for an inside pocket

17. Your Sashiko bag is done! Good job!
