Hello Sashiko lovers, it's Jun. It's been longer than I thought since we started worrying about this situation. Even we are doing well in Adelaide, it can be better to have a face mask or covering. Especially in where physical distancing is difficult.
I searched and made some patterns of face masks. And this is the one which is the simplest and also easy to breath.
What you need :
- 26 cm x 18 cm fabric for outer layer
- 18 cm x 18 cm fabric for middle layer
- 18 cm x 18 cm fabric for inner layer
- 2 pieces of 30 cm strips for ear loops
I use Japanese MOMEN cotton for the outer layer, homespun for the middle layer, and muslin for the inner layer. Recently it is hard to find suitable elastics for face masks, so I use strips from spandex.
1. Cut each corner of the outer layer as shown. 6 cm (W) x 4 cm (H)
2. Put the outer layer right side up, then put the inner layer next, and put the middle layer on the top. The inner and middle layers should be on the center of the outer layer.
3. Stitch the top and the bottom with 1 cm seam allowance.
4. Turn it right side out and iron it.
5. Top stitches on the top and the bottom.
6. Fold 4.5 cm of the top and the bottom and iron it.
7. Top stitches on where you folded.
8. Fold 2 cm on each side, and fold them again. Iron them.
9. Open the top flap, mark the corner. Repeat on each corner.
10. Mark 1.5 cm from the corners inside of the top and bottom flaps.
11. Match both marks on each corner. Clip or pin them.
12. Fold the sides back and wrap corners.
13. Stitch the sides. Back stitching at the beginning and the end.
14. Put the strips through into the loops. Tie and adjust the strips. Cut the excess and move the knots to the edges of the loops.
Your Sashiko face mask is done!
If you want all material (fabrics and ear loops), I have a kit for AU$5. The outer layer colours are available in natural, gray and navy. Sashiko pattern is SHIPPO (Seven treasures) or ASANOHA (Hemp leaf). Please send me a message. sashiko.adelaide@gmail.com
